Editions

Two builds, the same apart from Google. Pick one at install time; switching later means installing the other one's package and formatting data.

Vanilla

No Google services at all. Comes with the LineageOS apps, the Kompakt app for the settings Android has no home for, and three launchers to choose from: inkOS, Katapult and LineageOS's own.

GApps

Everything in Vanilla, plus Google Play services, the Play Store and a small set of Google apps (the Google app, speech services, Digital Wellbeing and TalkBack among them). Anything else you install from the Play Store.

Google Messages works, and its RCS chat shows as connected (tested on one carrier).

Two caveats, up front

The Play Protect popup. Google shows "This device isn't Play Protect certified" until you register the phone's ID with Google. It depends on a list of registered devices, not on how the ROM is built, so building differently cannot fix it. Registering takes Rooted debugging and a few adb commands. See Post install.

Google Wallet. It installs and runs, but you cannot add cards, so contactless payment does not work. If that is a requirement, this phone is not going to satisfy it.

Global and North American phones

The Kompakt is sold in two versions, Global and North American (USA), and they run different modem firmware. Our vendor image comes in two matching versions. The system image is the same for both.

Check which one you have:

adb shell getprop gsm.version.baseband
It saysYour phoneTake
MOLY.LR12A.R3.MP.V236.P8Globalthe files without usa
MOLY.LR12A.R3.MP.V236.P6North Americanthe files with usa

Use the one that matches. With the other region's vendor the phone still works and has mobile data, but calls over 4G never connect. In North America, where every carrier needs 4G calling, that means no calls at all.

Which file is which

The full update package is named for the edition and the region:

GAppsVanilla
GlobalKompaktOS-1.0-Global-GApps.zipKompaktOS-1.0-Global-Vanilla.zip
North AmericanKompaktOS-1.0-USA-GApps.zipKompaktOS-1.0-USA-Vanilla.zip

The recovery, KompaktOS-Kernel-LineageOS-Recovery-1.0.img, is the same for all four.

Switching between them

Install the other edition's package from the recovery, with Format data/factory reset first, as for a first install. Keeping your data across a switch is not supported: Google Play services landing on data set up without them, or disappearing from under apps that used them, tends to leave apps crashing.
