KompaktOS 1.2
20 October 2026. Everything that changes when you update from 1.1.
Each change has a number. If you have a question about one, mention its number, for example "1.2 #14".
Calls and mobile network
- Verizon works: mobile data, texts and calls. If calls still fail after updating, clear the Phone Services app's storage once.
- Changes to help with losing mobile network on Verizon, T-Mobile US and Orange France.
- Orange France uses both IPv4 and IPv6.
- The update installs the right modem firmware for your region. This fixes calls on Global phones that still had an older modem.
- Create IMS APN no longer adds a second IMS APN when your carrier already has one.
- During a call, the volume panel shows one slider instead of two.
- The labels on the call buttons (Record call, Add call, Hold) are no longer cut off.
- SIMs opens even with no SIM inserted, and shows No SIM.
- On the SIMs page, Switch to eSIM mode (or Switch to SIM 2 mode) says what it does and asks before it restarts the phone.
- In eSIM mode, one row opens the eSIM manager: Add eSIM, or eSIM with your carrier once an eSIM is on. The Add SIM row that came and went is gone.
- A new eSIM is turned on as soon as it finishes downloading.
- Mobile data reconnects by itself within seconds when the network ends it, also while you are on Wi-Fi, so MMS keeps working. Before, it stayed dead until you turned mobile data off and on.
- The modem's power saving works as on MuditaOS: always on, except while you share your connection. Android switched it on and off whenever the screen or the charger changed.
Sound
- The lowest call volume is much quieter, on normal, 4G and Wi-Fi calls. Call volume has 6 steps instead of 5.
- 30 media volume steps instead of 15.
- The volume panel is back to the older Android design: one outlined slider.
Notifications
- Tap the arrow on a notification to see its buttons, like Reply and Mark as read.
- The arrow that opens a notification has an outline, and the send button in a reply is solid.
- To clear a notification, swipe it. Its border turns dashed as you swipe. Let go when the whole border is dashed.
- Paged scrolling in the notifications. Clear all stays at the bottom.
- The notifications no longer grow and reorder the first time you open them after unlocking.
- Notification icons are black and white for apps that have a black and white icon.
- No more thin lines above a pop-up notification.
- Quick Settings tiles, the brightness slider and Messages bubbles have the same border thickness as notifications.
- The "device is not certified" notification from Google Play Services is hidden.
- Grouped notifications, like Google's weather, show on the lock screen when they fit.
- After you close an opened notification on the lock screen, the notifications stay at the top and Clear all stays at the bottom.
- When you wake the phone, lock screen notifications appear in place instead of moving up under the clock.
- The PIN pad (phone PIN and SIM PIN) responds faster: keys no longer flash black, and each digit appears as a dot straight away.
- Swiping up opens the PIN pad whole: the keys no longer show over the lock screen before its white background.
- The last notification on the lock screen shows when they all fit. It was hidden, so two or three notifications showed one fewer.
- A pop-up notification sits as far from the top of the screen as from the sides.
Lock screen and always-on display
- The always-on clock looks the same as the lock screen clock.
- The lock screen clock digits are sharper.
- The always-on display updates when a notification arrives or the battery changes, not only once a minute.
- The lock screen shows only as many notifications as fit, and the last one has round corners.
- Bigger unlock patterns (4×4 and up) work.
- Lock screen text stays black on light wallpapers.
- The big and small clocks switch without fading.
- Going back from the PIN pad no longer brings the lock screen back piece by piece.
- With no lock screen, the lock screen clock no longer shows over the home screen for a moment when you wake the phone.
- Warm flashlight.
- Add it to the lock screen: Wallpaper & style → Lock screen → Shortcuts.
- Or turn it on with the power button: Kompakt app → Settings → Power button light.
- Prevent accidental wake-up: Settings → Display. It stops the phone waking up in your pocket. It is on; turn it off in the same place.
- The widget button on the lock screen is gone. It did nothing.
- Fixed a rare bug where the home screen stopped responding after an unlock.
Screen
- The screen uses the same default temperature setting as MuditaOS (+11). Phones that had 0 move to +11 once.
- Less ghosting on the sleep screen: the screen is cleared every time you lock the phone.
- Your sleep screen picture shows right after a restart.
- A Quick Settings tile for each e-ink mode. Open Quick Settings, tap the pencil, and look under E-ink modes.
- Paged scrolling in Phone, Contacts, Calendar, Files, Music, Wallpaper & style and the rest of Settings.
Animations
- Some animations in the notifications, Quick Settings and Recents still played with animations off. They no longer do.
- The Phone dialpad and the Contacts menu no longer slide in and out.
- A tap no longer leaves a grey spot.
- The wallpaper no longer zooms when you open the notifications, Recents or an app.
- Going home no longer flashes black.
- Recents no longer leaves an app stuck on the home screen.
Fonts and emoji
- Pick a font for the whole phone: Google Sans, Roboto, Manrope, Noto Serif, Source Serif, Lato or JetBrains Mono. Kompakt app → Style → Font. The clock's width slider (Wallpaper & style → Clock) makes the clock thinner or bolder in every font.
- Emoji are black and white. For colour emoji: Kompakt app → Style → Emoji.
- TrebleDroid's Font family option is gone. It only changed some screens.
Status bar and Quick Settings
- The status bar has smaller side margins, like the lock screen.
- The status bar stays still when you open the notifications.
- When an app uses the camera or microphone, a small black or white dot shows in the corner instead of a green icon.
- A new battery icon, Bars: Settings → System → Status bar → Battery status style.
- Hold the Recents key to open Quick Settings, and hold it again to close them. Turn it on in Kompakt app → Settings.
- The tile editor has less empty space above and below its title, and the e-ink mode tiles have their own group, E-ink modes.
Settings
- A search result takes you straight to the setting.
- Every page keeps its title at the top. On the main Settings page, every page of rows starts at the same height, the last one included.
- App icons are black and white for apps that have a black and white icon.
- All apps scrolls without tapping the search box first.
- Battery usage shows how much each app uses.
- Battery saver no longer turns on dark mode.
- Pop-up windows in apps like Calendar have a border, and permission prompts are black in dark mode.
- Night Light, Extra dim, Lift to wake and the Media settings are gone. They did nothing on this phone.
- The Lock screen settings no longer show Widgets on lock screen, or a When to show heading with nothing under it.
- The Settings search bar has an outline.
Apps
- The built-in apps open faster, from the first start after the update.
- Swiping and scrolling are smoother.
- Katapult is updated to 1.7.
- inkOS is updated to the latest 0.7 build.
- Phone: Mute, Speaker and the other call buttons show when they are on. The answer button and the dialpad button have an outline, and the dialpad button is a rounded square like the add buttons in Calendar and Messages.
- Contacts: a contact opens full screen. A contact without a photo shows a black and white placeholder, and the menu and pop-up windows follow light and dark mode. The add button is a rounded square.
- Messages: the buttons in pop-up windows are visible in light and dark mode.
- Calendar:
- Events are black and white, not in colour.
- Swipe to change the month, week or day.
- Pop-up windows and the date and time pickers are black or white, not grey.
- Clock: the alarm screen is readable in light mode, and a paused stopwatch no longer blinks.
- Camera:
- New looks for photos and videos: B&W, Film and VHS.
- Save to the memory card: Camera settings → Save to SD card.
- The status bar hides again after a swipe.
- Paged scrolling in the camera settings, with a fixed title.
- Music:
- Redesigned for e-ink: outlined buttons and covers, and a smaller mini player.
- Albums, Artists, Genres and Playlists are the tabs at the bottom, and change without sliding.
- The header shows which page you are on; search and the menu button are on its right.
- The mini player sits right above the tabs.
- Albums is a list with small covers.
- To show album art in black and white: Music → Settings → Dither covers.
- Genre pages have a plain header and turn a page per swipe.
- The music provider and the Activity page are in Music → Settings.
- Paged scrolling in the rows of covers on the Activity page: swipe left or right to move a page of covers.
- Paged scrolling in the Music settings, with a fixed title.
- No visualizer.
- To hide the round play buttons: Music → Settings → Floating buttons.
- Coming back to the library shows the page of the selected tab.
- Pages change at once, without the old page showing under the new one.
- The song that is playing shows its title on the album page.
- Files: outlined files and folders, and the filter chips no longer pile up.
- Gallery: the selected tab has a pill behind its icon.
- Wallpaper & style: the lock screen and home screen previews sit side by side, and tapping the clock preview no longer closes the app. A swipe anywhere on the page turns a page. The Shortcuts page has no previews, and the shortcuts are four to a row.
- Keyboard: the emoji tabs are easier to read, and a swipe no longer jumps to another tab.
- eSIM manager (OpenEUICC): the add button matches the other apps, a rounded square with a border and no shadow.
Kompakt app
- A new layout with four tabs: Display, Offline, Style and Settings. Style has Font, Emoji and Display width. Temperature offset and Diagnostics are under ⋮ → Advanced.
- A new fingerprint action, Brightness on/off, for a double tap, triple tap or hold: Kompakt app → Settings → Fingerprint sensor.
- Switch mode on the fingerprint sensor goes through every mode you turned on, not only the first two.
- The refresh on unlock was often missed, mostly after the always-on display. It now lasts long enough to show.
- Security & privacy no longer warns about Per-app e-ink mode.
- The app shows the right e-ink mode after you change it from a Quick Settings tile or the fingerprint sensor.
- An app with its own e-ink mode, for example a reader in Text, keeps it after you unlock or refresh the screen (long press home). Before, it switched to another mode until you reopened the app.
- An app with its own e-ink mode keeps it while the keyboard or a pop-up from another app is open. Before, the keyboard switched the app to the default mode as soon as it appeared.
- A tap, double tap, triple tap or hold on the fingerprint sensor counts as using the phone, so the screen no longer turns off in the middle of it.
Kernel, vendor and recovery
These come in the same update package as the system. The recovery itself is unchanged; its image is released again as 1.1, with this kernel.
- The notification light brightness works when the light is set to Always on. A blinking light stays at full brightness.
- The lowest ringtone and notification volume is quieter.
- The battery reports its real capacity, 3037 mAh, so battery health shows 100%.
- The last app no longer shows through the sleep screen.
- Auto e-ink mode no longer flashes when you start scrolling.
Unlocked phone check
- Some apps that refuse to run on an unlocked phone might now see a locked one.
- To turn this off: TrebleDroid Settings → Misc → Securize.
After you update from 1.1
- If an app's notification light ignores the brightness, set its colour again in Settings → Notifications → Notification light.
- The brightness setting only dims a light that stays on. A blinking light is always at full brightness.
- If the lock screen text is white on a light wallpaper, set the wallpaper again.
