KompaktOS

LineageOS 23.2 (Android 16) Unofficial for the Mudita Kompakt, an e-ink phone built on a MediaTek MT6761 with a 480x800 panel and two SIM slots.

  • KompaktOS is not affiliated with Mudita or LineageOS. An independent project, and unrelated to CompactOS or Microsoft.
  • We call it KompaktOS because "LineageOS 23.2 (Android 16) Unofficial" is a mouthful.
  • Installing it replaces the software your phone shipped with, and nobody but you is responsible for the result.

GSI or custom ROM?

Both:

  • Based on a GSI (generic system image): Treble patches make the system run on the Kompakt.
  • Ships as a custom ROM: one full package, with its own LineageOS recovery.
  • The recovery installs updates by adb sideload or over the air (OTA).
  • This build only works on the Kompakt.
  • The patches are open source: you can use them to build it for other phones.

Made for e-ink

  • Android reskinned for the e-ink screen, in light and dark mode
  • Animations turned off
  • Partial refresh, so the screen flashes less
  • An Auto mode that switches between fast and quality refresh by itself
  • An always-on display that still lets the phone sleep: 3–4% battery overnight
  • Per-app e-ink modes: Text for a reader, Fast for Signal or WhatsApp
  • Per-app invert: for apps that only come with a dark theme, like Spotify

Security

Android itself carries security patches from 1 August 2026. Our kernel and vendor image are built from Mudita's source and files, so they keep Mudita's patch level.

Easier to install than it was

One file installs everything, from our LineageOS recovery. The SELinux policy problems that previously forced a downgrade to 1.1.1 are patched, so no partition downgrade is needed.

Who it's for

A good fit if:

  • You want current Android security patches
  • You miss basic settings: changing your PIN, the Bluetooth or Wi-Fi name, or joining a hidden network
  • You want full control over sounds, vibration and notifications
  • You need apps that require Google Play services: there is a GApps edition
  • Apps you need no longer install on MuditaOS, which is based on Android 12

Not for you if:

  • The phone already does what you need
  • You are not comfortable with ADB or mtkclient
  • You need Google Wallet for payments: cards cannot be added

Where to start

  • Editions — vanilla or with Google services
  • Install — putting it on the phone
